Pictures from Providenciales

Well Ike has come and gone as Krys has mentioned – we have been lucky to escape with very little damage here on Providenciales. Our office internet connection is still not working so I am posting this from one of the resorts!
It seems that Grand Turk and the smaller islands to the eastern side of Turks & Caicos that were in the direct path of Hurricane Ike have suffered quite a lot of property damage – but contrary to some of the more sensational reports on some news stations there don’t seem to have been any fatalities anywhere in Turks & Caicos as far as we know at this time. Providenciales, where we are and where the vast majority of the resorts hotels condos and vacation villas are located, had just a little local flooding and some roof tile damage. Power was out in some areas but has now mostly been restored. So to show that we are all OK – here are some pictures of the main locations in the Grace Bay area, taken less than 24 hours after the hurricane passed by…
Here’s Nikki Beach Resort at Leeward:

Club Med Turkoise:

Ocean Club East:

Mango Reef restaurant and bar at Royal West Indies was open again on Monday morning!:

Royal West Indies resort:

Seven Stars resort:

Grace Bay beach – freshly washed!!

Grace Bay Club:

The Sands Resort:

The Somerset on Grace Bay:

The Regent Palms and The Alexandra:

Turtle Cove Marina:

So as you can see, a few palm trees have had a haircut, there’s a bit of sweeping up and fixing of window screens and fences to do, but apart from that Provo is in good shape and all the resorts will be welcoming visitors again very soon.

Thank you so much for your pics. As an owner at The Somerset- we were so anxious about the storm and these pics only confirm what friends on island have sent to us. thank you so much for making me smile tonight!
PS- your work is amazing!

Any word on pics from Grand Turk????
September 11th, 2008 at 8:49 am
Thanks for taking the time to post these updates. We love visiting Providenciales and have been anxious for more information. Our hearts break for those on Grand Turk who suffered devastating damage. Hopefully all of us visitors who love the islands will find it in our hearts to reach out with donations to assist with the hurricane relief.
Having said all of that, I’m curious if you have any pictures or information about Beaches. The boards on Trip Advisor are going crazy with reports that they are closed until November 15 due to hurricane damage. All of this seems inconsistent with reports of Grace Bay being in good condition – as your pictures clearly represent.
If you have any pictures or information you can post, it would be most appreciated. I feel particularly bad for a young woman on Trip Advisor who is (was) getting married at Beaches next month.
Thank you and stay safe!

Re: Beaches, we have the same issue. We are supposed to arrive on October 18th. Hurrican Hannah caused an announced closure until September 26th, and as far as I can tell, beaches is sticking with that tagline. But here is what is odd. Two nights ago, I could book a room at Beaches for Sept 26th, but not the 25th, so their booking engine was aligned with the announced Sept 26 reopening. However, last night, I tried the same trick and could not book prior to November 1st. If you call them up, they are still saying no damage was done and that they will be open Sept 26th. Conflicting information to be sure. Please post what you find as I am also interested!

Great job of putting to bed the false rumours of the destruction of the whole island chain. Whilst we feel for the residents of the worst affected areas, we are extremely grateful for the “sparing” of Provo. It truly is a testament to the building standards in place for the newer developments. Again, thank you for taking the trouble to photograph the region for us.

Rob,
Beaches is closed until mid Nov. I have called and was told that by an agent.
September 11th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
In a travel agency memo: Chairman Butch @ Sandals/Beaches has stated they are re-opening the TCI Beaches on Nov 15th. The resort has to be brought back up to its 5 star rating, which requires extensive clean up efforts, prior to re-opening.

Sounds like most came through on Providenciales with as little damage as can be expected. We’re battening down the hatches here in Texas in anticipation of Ike.
Anyway, any word on the damage done to the Silly Creek area? We have rented a villa in that edition beginning Oct. 16. Supposedly, things are fine, but quite frankly.. am concerned we will look too much like the “ugly Americans on holiday.” If the islands are struggling to get their lives back together, we don’t want to come across as insulting or insensitive to those affected by Ike.

Thanks for the kind comments on the photos everybody…
I don’t have specific information right now on the Beaches resort – however I would be surprised if there was any serious damage there. They did close for a month the last time we had a close pass by a hurricane a couple of years ago, so I expect they are doing the same thing – using the slow season to close and tidy up properly and do the kind of maintenance that is hard to do when guests are on-property.
Steven – by October 16th I think your villa will be fine. The south side of Provo was more exposed to the winds (Ike passed to the south of us) – but damage on properties here has generally been limited to some missing roof tiles and torn mosquito screens. And far from being “insulted” by “ugly American” visitors I am sure you will find everyone here very welcoming – tourism is Turks & Caicos’ major business and we want everyone to come and enjoy the islands again as normal!
Grand Turk and South Caicos have been hardest hit, of course, and efforts are already under way to help them rebuild as soon as possible. Provo however is already up and running (we had power restored in the Long Bay area today – most of the island kept power throughout the storm) and in a few weeks I think it will be hard to see many signs of the storm’s passage here.

You all have answered alot of prayers for me. I have been very concerned with conditions on Provo.. I still have concerns with friends and family but I think once all power is back up I will be getting an email.
We were at Grace Bay Club until the weekend before the hurricanes. I’ve been worried about all my adopted family at the Hotel. You have eased my mind, THANK YOU!!
September 12th, 2008 at 10:17 am
Thank you so much for the pictures! Everything really looks the same, maybe just a few flowers missing. I have been reading about beach erosion but it looks normal to me.

Having stayed at the Royal West Indies several times, I have to say that the picture you show with the wood decking can’t be current. The trees in front of bldg. 1 aren’t right, there is no beach hut in the right side of photo and the deck is different from anything i’ve seen over the last several years. What’s up?!?!
September 12th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
Well, sorry O.J. – but you are mistaken. All these photographs were taken on Monday morning – that particular one was taken at 10.47am on 8th September 2008 according to the digital image file data.
That deck area at RWI normally has chairs and tables on it, which is probably why you don’t recognize it. The beach hut is out of shot to the right.

Thank you Chris! Having been a customer of Tropical Imaging I love your photos and am so happy to see the truth in image. I’m happy to see that all is well and that you all are safe and sound. We’ll have plans to be out there again in January and are so happy to see that we still have the beauty of Provo to look forward to.

We are travelling to Beaches on T&C later this year, I called them this morning to check status of resort and was advised that the resort is closed until 14th/15th November.
September 15th, 2008 at 9:11 am
Thank goodness everyone is ok !! When we saw the news, we were so sad to think anyone there was hurt. Such wonderful people and incredible beauty.
My husband and I were married at Coral Gardens on Grace Bay, and it is the most beautiful place I have ever seen in my life.
September 16th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Any news on how the island looks underwater? We are avid divers and wondering how the reefs held up in the storm. We are coming out to SCUBA in Oct.
Thanks for posting the photos !
September 21st, 2008 at 4:18 pm
We are coming to Salt Cay Nov.1 to SCUBA. We are wondering how the reefs around Salt Cay held up during IKE. Has anyone posted underwater pics since IKE?
Thanks for posting land photos and glad to hear no deaths or major injuries have been reported.
God Bless…

We are so happy to see the pictures of the Ocean Club East -our favorite spot in the Caribbean. Having been married there, we were so worried, and there hasn’t been much TV coverage on T&C up here in Florida. The Resort looks great and we hope all the folks, who treat us so special, are safe and sound.
Take care and thanks again for the great pictures.

WONDERING WHY ALL THE PICTURES ARE TAGGED WITH “ike”
September 24th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
Thank you so much for posting this information, Chris! I have been thinking often about everyone down there in Provo – especially Ileana Ravasio and Preston from your company, who took the most amazing family portraits for us while we were staying at the Royal West Indies last Thanksgiving. I have the portraits hanging here in my office and gaze upon them daily as I think back to the wonderful holiday we spent on that beautiful island. We are seriously considering going back for this Thanksgiving holiday and your pictures have only reinforced that idea. So glad to hear that Provo faired so well and hope that the other islands aren’t much worse off. Best wishes!

What do you know about the status of Beaches Resort? Can you show us any updated pictures?
September 25th, 2008 at 9:24 am
Maui – the photos are tagged as “IKE” because they were taken in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.
Jennifer – you are very welcome!
Beaches Tourist – we don’t have access to take photos inside the Beaches Resort because it is private. But it is on the same beach as all the other resorts pictured here so will not have suffered any more damage than the rest. Beaches are taking longer to reopen partly because they are also putting the finishing touches to their new “Italian Village” section.

I’ve never been to T&C islands but have been collecting ideas for a December honeymoon for some time now and prior to the hurricanes they were the front runner on our list– since seeing this site maybe they are again! Hope all is really well there. I still worry about conflicting reports and don’t want to make a bad decision when this is such a special once-in-a-lifetime vacation for us–any suggestions for resorts we should check out? We love to take long beach walks– so we want to be on a long uninterrupted stretch of beach–preferrably all inclusive and adults only.
Thanks so much for any input!

We couldn’t be happier to hear and see that all is well in Provo. I watched and read the blogs on WIV4 daily after Ike and my heart was breaking for those that suffered the most. So glad to hear that Provo and our favorite,”Ocean Club” survived the storm. We will definately be back!!!
September 29th, 2008 at 7:21 am

Hi – I love Turks & Caicos and was devastated when the Hurricane hit, but after looking at your web site it looks fine, I have been 3 times and was thinking of another visit in March so I will keep my fingers crossed. Was Ocean Club West ok as I didn’t see that in your pics – that is my favourite and would like to buy there eventually.

Just got back from Provo. Stayed at the Villa Osprey. The pics are accurate.. island was very good… trade winds made snorkeling a bit rough, but we thoroughly enjoyed everything. If you have a chance, dine at Coco Bistro… great food.. and of course.. Da Conch Shack was a repeated favorite of ours. Beaches were smooth. A great time.

What is the latest on Beaches. Is it still there? Open? Worth going over Thanksgiving?
November 19th, 2008 at 11:51 am
we just got back from Turks; stayed at the Sands. we were getting flyers on the beach from Beaches. Lights were on later in the week…?

I’m glad to see the gem of resorts on this island were ok also! I was set to go to the Palms toward the end of the month. Premiere Michael Misick always makes us feel so welcome. I hope everything will be ok, can’t wait to get there! Grace Bay is nice too.
